The Yoruba socio-political organisation, Ìgbìmò Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that his government’s only notable achievement has been imposing more taxes on the poor Nigerians while he lives in luxurious life. According to the group, this has further exacerbated the economic hardship faced by citizens, with many struggling to make ends meet.
The union expressed its disappointment and frustration with the government’s policies, which they believe have led to Economic instability given the removal of fuel subsidies and introduction of new taxes which have contributed to soaring inflation, making it difficult for Nigerians to afford basic necessities. Also, many businesses have shut down and collapsed, leaving breadwinners unable to provide for their families due to economic instability and hardship. Furthermore. insecurity has forced many people to flee their ancestral homes, and the government has failed to guarantee the safety of its citizens.
The union lamented that many children have dropped out of school, and married women have resorted to casual relationships due to poverty and anti-people policies implemented by the Tinubu administration.
You would recall that President Tinubu signed four tax reform bills into law in June 2025, aimed at harmonising tax rules and boosting revenue. However, the move has been met with controversy, with critics arguing that it will worsen the living costs for Nigerians. The Yoruba Union has described Tinubu’s tax policies as “anti-people” and accused him of mortgaging the lives of present and future generations through continuous borrowing while living lavishly.
To address the economic challenges facing Nigeria, the Yoruba Union has called on President Tinubu to reconsider his economic policies: The union believes that the government’s policies have been detrimental to the well-being of Nigerians and urges the president to revisit and revise them.
The government should focus on providing essential services and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens thereby, prioritizing its citizens’ welfare. More so, the union emphasize the need for the government to listen to the concerns of citizens and address their demands.
The criticism from the Yoruba Union highlights the growing discontent among Nigerians with the economic policies of the Tinubu administration. To mitigate the situation, the government needs to take bold steps to address the economic challenges facing the country and prioritise the welfare of its citizens. By engaging with citizens and reconsidering its policies, the government can work towards creating a more prosperous and stable Nigeria, the group said.
